longrMany people wonder how a training plan is put together, especially when it concerns the dreaded long run. The long run is in the schedule not to torture you, but to make sure that you get to the start line ready to run the full distance. It is the most important run in a runners training program. Each weeks long run is set up to give you approximately 15% of your full weeks distance in one go. For those running 100km per week you should ideally do 15 - 20km of it in the long run. This is a general rule of thumb that many training plans use because time and time again, people who push too far over it or run significantly beneath it, show up to the line over or undertrained and the worst feeling in the world is not being prepared for something.

rundistancesWhen undertaking a training plan, it is necessary to commit fully to completing the prescribed workouts to the best of your ability. That means that if you undertake it and fail to complete workouts because of a busy schedule or a lack of motivation to get out the door, then you have not tried to the best of your ability. However, there are some individuals who even when trying to the best of their ability, still are not able to complete the training. If you are in this situation, it is important not to panic or despair. Panic is by far the worst thing because that can drive people to have irrational thoughts and do crazy things like trying to make up for lost training which usually leads to injury. Despair on the other hand, makes you apathetic and many will give up on trying to complete their training or race goals.

trackerIt is exceptionally easy to get lost on trails that are in our own cities or even backyards, however if this is a concern for you when you want to go and explore a new trail for a long run, getting a GPS can be the answer.
Using one of these can be a bit tricky since most GPS units are designed for cars and are only programmed with local roads and will not have single track trails. But there are running models available that will locate trails more easily. Many smart phones now come equipped with GPS devices so if you have a phone that doubles as an MP3 player that you take along anyway, it may be worth purchasing a GPS upgrade.
